Enterprise Server 3.16 Release Notes – GitHub

As the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI), I owned documentation for GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) major and patch releases, including new feature docs and release notes. I established and managed a rotation program for technical writers supporting each release, ensuring coverage and consistency across versions, and personally served as the docs DRI for the GHES 3.16 release cycle.

Context

Each GHES release involved close collaboration with PMs, TPMs, and engineers to communicate new and updated features, fixes, and breaking changes for enterprise administrators and developers. For the 3.16 release, I led coordination across globally distributed teams to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery within GitHub’s docs-as-code publishing workflow.

Activities:

  • Planned and managed crelease notes workflow for GHES 3.16, from information gathering to publication
  • Partnered with product managers and engineers to validate technical accuracy and ensure alignment across teams
  • Authored, edited, and standardized release notes, prioritizing clarity and user needs
  • Collaborated with the Releases team to address blockers and improve workflow efficiency
  • Helped support lightweight automations and AI-assisted tooling to streamline content gathering and review.

Impact

This initiative streamlined and standardized the GHES release notes process, improved publishing efficiency, and strengthened collaboration between teams. My contributions enabled repeatably excellent results by standardizing and documenting internal processes. I was recognized by peers for my leadership, process ownership, and raising the standard for quality and consistency in release notes.
